Astronaut Reveals Depression In the Wake of Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She described the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the avalanche of misogyny.

She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after surviving a rape during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She noted that amid the criticism, important benefits had come out of the mission, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The diverse crew also featured leaders in various fields.

The enterprise behind the mission is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
